How Furro Breeders came to be
Furro Breeders was born by listening. We met dozens of breeders from across Finland and had long conversations about the kind of protection breeders really need, and where today's solutions leave them on their own.
The same themes came up again and again. The dam's post-birth complications, for which there was no comprehensive cover. The risks of latent defects in puppies' early life, which no one seemed to take into account. And the moment of handover, when a breeder wants to know that the puppy is leaving for its new home protected.
We didn't want to make small tweaks to the old model. We wanted to build breeders a genuinely new option — together with them.
Out of these conversations came a cover that spans the dam's birth complications through to mastitis and uterine infections, puppies' early illnesses and accidents, and latent-defect cover all the way to the age of two. Thanks to Furro's community model, all of this is possible without the price level of traditional insurance.
We also built the handover into what breeders had hoped for: the new owner can activate the puppy's Furro cover with a few clicks, with no waiting periods. The puppy leaves for its new home protected.
Furro Breeders is proof of what's possible when modern technology is combined with old-fashioned community spirit, and when we take the time to listen to those who know the subject best.
Furro Breeders FAQ
Furro Breeders is designed for breeders who want protection for the most important risks facing the dam and litter, from pregnancy through to handover and the time after it. It suits breeders who want to manage the cost risks involved in breeding, protect the dam and puppies, and give each puppy seamless, uninterrupted cover that continues past the moment of handover. Furro Breeders is a standalone cover, so it doesn't require Furro's basic cover and can also run alongside a traditional Finnish pet insurance policy.
Furro Breeders covers certain birth-related vet costs for the dam, such as a medically indicated, unplanned caesarean and other birth complications. The cover also includes post-birth complications such as mastitis and uterine infections as well as problems with milk production. For puppies, Furro Breeders covers the treatment costs of a newly arising illness, injury or accident, and, subject to the detailed terms, also structural latent defects. The latent-defect cover can include not only treatment costs but also the puppy's value.
Furro Breeders must be taken out by the seventh week of pregnancy at the latest, meaning up to 49 days after mating. It's worth taking out the cover well before this so it's reliably in force at the right time.
Yes, you can. Furro Breeders is its own standalone cover, so it doesn't require Furro's basic cover and also works alongside a traditional pet insurance policy.
Furro Breeders covers birth-related vet costs for the dam, such as a medically indicated, unplanned caesarean as well as other birth complications. The cover also includes post-birth complications such as mastitis and uterine infections as well as problems with milk production.
Yes, Furro Breeders can cover an unplanned caesarean, but only under certain conditions. Under the Community Rules, a medically indicated, unplanned caesarean is covered. In practice this means a caesarean may become eligible for cover when the birth isn't progressing normally, or when the condition of the dam or puppies requires urgent intervention in the vet's judgement. In that case the unplanned caesarean falls under the dam's birth complications. A caesarean planned in advance, on the other hand, is not covered by Furro Breeders.
As litter treatment costs, Furro Breeders covers vet examination and treatment costs arising from a newly acquired illness, injury or accident that begins during the puppy's cover period and during the puppy's lifetime. Congenital illnesses or structural defects are not covered as litter treatment costs; instead, they are assessed separately under the latent-defect terms.
In Furro Breeders, a latent defect means a structural defect that was already present in the puppy before birth and is not a new illness, injury or accident acquired during the puppy's lifetime. The key point is that the defect existed at birth or early on, but was not known about and had not shown symptoms before the cover began. The latent-defect cover takes effect for the puppy when it receives a puppy health check certificate, with no remarks, between the ages of 5 weeks and 4 months. The latent-defect cover also remains in force after the puppy's handover, up to the age of two. For clarity, a latent defect means a defect that existed but stayed hidden during the puppy health check and in everyday life until it later comes to light. For this reason, latent defects are handled as a separate part of the cover from illnesses, injuries or accidents that begin later in the puppy's life. The latent-defect cover can include the vet's examination and treatment costs as well as the puppy's value, if the pet has to be put down based on a veterinary assessment due to a poor treatment prognosis, or when the treatment costs would exceed the pet's purchase price. At the same time, it's important to note that not all structural defects fall within the cover. Excluded from cover are, for example, defects that don't seriously affect the puppy's health, defects noted at the puppy health check, as well as hip and elbow joint diseases, patellar luxation, osteochondrosis, dental diseases, malocclusion or congenitally missing teeth.
For the dam, Furro Breeders is in force up to eight weeks after the birth. For the puppies, the litter treatment cost cover is in force until handover or for a maximum of 16 weeks from birth. In addition, the puppies' latent-defect cover is in force up to the age of two.
The Furro Breeders deductible is 50 euros per clinic visit + 25 % of the remaining amount. In practice, 50 euros is first deducted from each reimbursable vet visit, and after that a further 25 % of the remaining sum is left as your deductible.
Through Furro Breeders you can receive reimbursement of up to 3 000 euros for the dam, up to 2 000 euros for the litter, and, for latent defects, the puppy's sale price per puppy, but no more than 3 000 euros. In addition to the vet's examination and treatment costs, the latent-defect cover can also include the puppy's value, in accordance with the detailed Furro Breeders terms.
Furro Breeders doesn't cover every vet cost related to breeding; the cover is limited to the situations set out in the terms. For the dam, the cover doesn't reimburse a caesarean planned in advance, nor the costs of injuries or illnesses that began before the cover was taken out or that begin only after the cover has ended. For litter treatment costs, Furro Breeders doesn't cover congenital illnesses as ordinary litter treatment costs before the vet's check and a puppy health check certificate with no remarks. The litter treatment cost cover is intended for acquired illnesses, injuries and accidents that begin during the puppy's cover period and during the puppy's lifetime, so congenital or structural problems are assessed separately, solely under the latent-defect terms. In practice, this means that not every problem that appears in a puppy automatically falls within the scope of litter treatment cost cover. For latent defects, the cover doesn't reimburse rehabilitation, nor defects that don't seriously affect the puppy's health. Also excluded from cover are defects noted on the certificate issued at the vet's puppy health check, since in that case it's no longer a latent defect as defined in the terms. In addition, certain specifically named illnesses and defects are excluded from the latent-defect cover, such as hip and elbow joint diseases, patellar luxation, osteochondrosis, dental diseases, malocclusion and congenitally missing teeth. A latent defect is also not covered if the defect was known about before the cover took effect, if it showed symptoms before the cover began, or if the puppy doesn't have a vet's puppy health check with no remarks as required by the terms. For puppies, the cover doesn't reimburse injuries or illnesses that begin only after the Furro Breeders cover has ended. For those situations you should, as a rule, use the puppy's own new Furro cover or a traditional pet insurance policy, if the new owner has one.
Furro Breeders is designed so that the breeder can transfer the puppy's cover to its new owner digitally, with a few clicks, on the day of handover. The aim is to make the handover as smooth, light and paperless as possible. When the transfer is made from Oma Furro, the puppy's cover continues uninterrupted and with no waiting periods for the new owner. In practice, the idea behind Furro Breeders is that the puppy's cover doesn't end "into a void" at the moment of handover; instead, the puppy's cover can be transferred as part of the puppy's new ownership without heavy paperwork. This is one of the product's key benefits, because the cover was built specifically for a seamless handover.
How you make a claim depends a little on whether you visit one of Furro's recommended clinics or an approved clinic. Up-to-date information on how to make a claim in your particular situation is always available in Oma Furro. For a claim you'll usually need the vet's patient record and an itemised breakdown of the costs.
